Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Mercer County: Recognizing Abuse and Finding Confidential Support
In Sharon and throughout Mercer County, every person deserves to feel safe, respected, and supported. During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, AWARE, Inc. invites our neighbors to learn more about domestic violence, challenge harmful assumptions, and help make sure survivors know they are not alone.
Domestic violence is about power and control, and it can affect people of every age, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, income level, culture, and family structure. Support is available, and each survivor has the right to make choices at their own pace.
Domestic Violence Can Take Many Forms
Domestic violence is not limited to physical harm. It can include a pattern of behaviors used to intimidate, isolate, manipulate, or control another person. Some forms may be visible to others, while many are not.
Abuse may involve emotional behaviors, such as humiliation, threats, constant criticism, or isolation from loved ones. It can include sexual coercion, financial control over earnings or access to necessities, and digital abuse through monitoring devices, accounts, messages, or social media. It may also include coercive or controlling behaviors that make someone feel unable to make everyday decisions freely.
Experiences do not have to fit a single definition or reach a particular point before someone deserves help. If a relationship feels unsafe, controlling, or frightening, confidential support can be an important next step.
Misconceptions Can Make It Harder to Seek Help
Many survivors face questions or judgments that overlook the complex realities of abuse. One common misconception is that people can simply leave when they recognize a problem. In reality, leaving or changing a relationship can involve safety concerns, housing needs, children, finances, immigration concerns, emotional ties, disability-related access needs, and many other factors. A survivor is never responsible for another person’s abusive behavior.
Another misconception is that abuse only happens in certain kinds of relationships or households. Domestic violence can affect anyone, including LGBTQ+ people, young people, older adults, people with disabilities, and individuals of any gender. Believing survivors and making support accessible helps create a safer Mercer County for everyone.
It is also important to remember that a person does not need visible injuries or proof that satisfies someone else in order to deserve compassion. Listening without judgment can make a meaningful difference.
How Friends and Family Can Offer Support
If someone shares that they may be experiencing abuse, a calm, caring response can help them feel less alone. Start by listening. You might say, “I believe you,” “This is not your fault,” or “You deserve to be safe.” Avoid pressuring them to leave, confront the person causing harm, report to law enforcement, or make decisions before they are ready.
Instead, ask what would feel helpful and respect their choices. Offer practical support when it is safe to do so, such as helping them identify community resources, providing transportation, keeping a copy of important information if they request it, or sitting with them while they contact a hotline. Be mindful that a person’s phone, computer, vehicle, or accounts may be monitored. Do not leave messages, send resources, or contact others about the situation without their permission.
In an immediate emergency, call 911. In other situations, connecting someone with trained advocates can provide space to talk through options and create a personalized safety plan.

Whether someone needs crisis intervention, counseling, help understanding available legal resources, or a connection to housing support, our team is here to listen.
Prevention Begins With Community Education
Domestic Violence Awareness Month is also an opportunity to strengthen prevention. Healthy relationships are built on mutual respect, consent, communication, boundaries, and shared decision-making. Community education helps people recognize warning signs, respond supportively, and build environments where abuse is not ignored or excused.
AWARE, Inc. offers community education programs that help Mercer County residents, organizations, and young people learn more about domestic violence and sexual assault prevention. Sharing accurate information, challenging victim-blaming language, and encouraging respectful relationships are meaningful ways to support a community free from violence.
